Casey did her Make-A-Wish Trip. She chose to go to Disneyworld in Orlando Florida.
She couldnt go on very many rides but I remember her looking at me with excitment at the parks, and telling me she was enjoying watching her little sisters having fun.

Johnston's 'Moon' lets student shine in new role

A year after Casey Aschan-Cox first tried out for a Johnston High School play, her classmates created a role to make her shine. Aschan-Cox, who has muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair, was cast in "Moon Child," written by students and based on the book "Moon Boy" by Barbara Brenner. It's one of four one-act plays that make up the drama department's fall production, which debuts tonight. Last year, no roles in the school play fit Aschan-Cox's needs. She said she loves being in the play because she is meeting new people through the rehearsals.

Casey graduated from Johnston Community High school in Blank Childrens Hospital. I am as proud of her now as I was then.

We are all so proud of Casey's accomplishments.

Passed away on March 18, 2010 at 9 am at St Lukes Pediatric Hospice in Cedar Rapids Iowa.

 My Child
On the day God took you
I thought that I would die
I wondered where the time went?
I asked alot of whys??
With people all around me
I felt alone inside
From all their words of comfort,
I couldn't seem to hide,
I thought I might be dreaming
That I'd wake and find you here,
I thought "This can't be happening."
As I wiped another tear.
On the day that you were laid to rest
My heart broke yet again,
I wondered if the pain would end,
But mostly, I wondered when??
It's hard to be without you,
At times the days seem long,
Sometimes I just sit crying,
When there's really nothing wrong.
I wish we'd had more time,
Before your life was done.
I hope your resting peacefully,
....My precious one

Casey's friends at Johnston High School held a memorial service for her. They presented me a box of their favorite memories with Casey.

They also planted a tree , a golden elm tree because she had a heart of gold , a tree with real personality. Just like Casey.

They also put a bench by her tree in memory of her. Sometimes her tree and bench get decorated for the holidays by friends & teachers , and others for her angelversary.

This spring (2013) I hope to put a flat plaque with her name on it between the tree and the bench so everyone knows whose tree it is for years to come.

In honor of what should have been Casey's 20th birthday we (friends, and family) made and donated 20 blankets to our local hospice in memory of Casey.

In 2013 for what should have been her 21st we will be doing 21.
